Market Days & Tabo
Public markets, tabo schedule, and the egg economy of Bantayan Island.
*Tabo* — the Visayan word for market day, a periodic gathering of extra vendors and fresh goods.
Tabo is a central institution in Bantayan Island life. On tabo days, additional vendors come from neighbouring barangays, bringing fresh catch, produce, live poultry, and various goods. It's a social occasion as much as a commercial one — neighbours catch up, prices are negotiated, and the freshest products of the week are available.

Tabo Schedule
Traditionally, island communities hold tabo on rotating days, with different barangays having their market day on different days of the week.
- Bantayan town market operates daily with designated heavier trading days
- Barangay tabo — some outer barangays hold informal weekly market gatherings
How to get the latest schedule
- • Ask at your accommodation
- • Check with the municipal hall of each municipality
- • Ask local vendors — they'll know which day has the freshest stock
Egg Market
The poultry and egg industry is central to Bantayan Island's economy. The island produces large volumes of eggs distributed across the Visayas.
- Fresh local eggs widely available at public markets
- Prices generally lower than mainland Cebu
- Native eggs (itlog sa manok bisaya) — smaller, more flavourful, and more expensive than commercial eggs. Sometimes available.
Live Price Board
Crowdsourced fish, egg, and produce prices — reported by locals.
Tips for Market Visitors
Bring cash
No card payments at public markets. ATMs are available in Bantayan town and Sta. Fe.
Go early
The freshest products are sold in the first few hours. Aim for 5:30–8:30 AM.
Bring a reusable bag
Plastic bags are provided but their quality varies. An eco bag is practical.
Negotiate respectfully
Haggling is part of the culture. "Pwede pabawas?" (Can you lower the price?) is the standard opener.
Try new things
The market is the best place to discover unfamiliar dried fish, local spices, or fresh seafood.
Dress practically
Open-air markets can get warm. Light clothing and sandals that handle moisture are ideal.
